Module 2 – Incubator Program

Approach

This execution focused program is designed to embed Blue Ocean Strategy (BOS) methods and thinking into your executive and project teams. It will help you to formulat, document, validate and execute your Blue Ocean Strategies for new or re-launched business units, products or services.
Through a series of workshops, interspersed with field and project work, the incubator program embeds Blue Ocean Strategy into your executive team and helps you incubate your best Blue Ocean Strategy ideas.
It involves an initial 2-day introduction and Value Innovation workshop, followed by 4 x 1.5 day group workshops covering the exploration of innovation opportunities for your business and industry in all three areas of Value to Customers, Business Model Innovation (your Profit Proposition) and Engagement Model Innovation (your People Proposition). At the end of each 1.5 day workshop there are additional individual team meetings with your Blue Ocean Strategy facilitator designed to work on the development and project management of your field exploration, validation and execution action plans.
Overall it is a 4 – 6 month program with a combination of one-on-one, group and team coaching depending on your needs.
This program can be run for one or several teams simultaneously or we can combine attendees from one or more non-competing organisations, divisions or business units.

Objectives and Expectations

Participants can expect to:

• Progress through the entire process of developing an executable Blue Ocean Strategy from idea generation through to conducting field research and implementation.

• Learn, examine and put into practice the central concepts, frameworks and analytical tools of Blue Ocean Strategy formulation, validation and execution.

• Learn and apply the advanced application of BOS tools and methodologies using their own organisation’s products and services.

• Receive expert guidance throughout the development and execution of their strategy by a team of Qualified and Accredited BOS Practitioners.

• Work in a highly interactive, dynamic, small group, team-based environment.

• Create a BOS dossier containing their entire suite of BOS formulation, validation and execution work.

Program Outline

Phase 1 – Initial Two Day workshop

In this phase participants are introduced to the BOS methods, tools and thinking through a two day workshop covering:
- The Three Aligning Propositions of BOS
- Value Innovation
- The Six Principles of New Market Creation
- The Four Actions Framework

Value Proposition, Visual Awakening

This phase focuses on developing your organisation’s value proposition. This includes working through the tools and methods in a variety of settings including workshops, forums, discussion groups and online. The tools and strategies used to develop your proposition in this phase include:
- Evaluating your organisation against your greatest competitors using the As Is Strategy Canvas
- Viewing where your offerings lie in comparison to your industry by using the Pioneer Migrator Settler Map
- Identifying your customer’s pain points during the entire buying cycle by using the Buyer Utility Map
- Identifying noncustomers

Profit Proposition, Visual Exploration and Creation

This third phase focuses on the exploration and validation of your ideas, services, products or new business. It involves researching both the experience of your customer and your noncustomer as well as reaching out to stakeholders and potential execution partners. Using this research, you will explore how to redefine industry boundaries using:
- the Six Paths Framework
- new approaches to Business Model Generation
- Fair Process
- Tipping Point Leadership
This phase often includes field research, data gathering and analysis as well as regular mentoring and coaching.

People Proposition, Adoption, Engagement and Execution

In this phase we work with you to make sure that your Value Proposition and Profit Proposition align with your People Proposition in order to make the execution of your BOS as seamless and successful as possible. All organisations rely on people in some way so it is important to make sure that the people in your organisation are managed to help you succeed. We do this by further applying the principles of Tipping Point Leadership and Fair Process.
This phase typically consists of workshops, field research, discussions and online collaboration.

Ongoing Execution
This phase consists of ongoing regular mentoring and follow up to make sure your strategy is on track. All strategies need some recalibration, tweaking and adjustment over time due to changes in environment, circumstance or personnel. We help you stay on track with regular reporting, coaching and mentorship.

Prerequisites for participation

There are no set prerequisites for participation in the incubator program. However prior to launch we scope the project with the Sponsor.

Locations and Dates

Various locations are used during the project however most activities are conducted at your premises. The various dates and times for workshops, group sessions and mentoring are agreed early on in the project.

Investment

Average investment per organisation is $60,000 over the delivery period. However actual investment is determined according to individual circumstances. For instance, if most participants have already completed Module 1 – Deep Dive or the organisation has previously undertaken the Sponsor’s Module this will reduce the cost.
A fixed cost will be negotiated during the initial stages of the project. We provide this fixed cost so that team members may feel that they can approach our Practitioners at any time without fear of expanding costs.
